Stefanaki

Ive assigned a custom button to toggle between Manual and Auto Focus on R5/R5ii  but it does not do anything.

Any idea how to make it work?

Hi Stefanki, welcome to the community here.

It will be a little easier if you can mention which button you have customised and exactly what the function you have selected from the customise buttons, and what lens you are using.

I just tried to use the AF/MF function assigned to the * / AE-lock button on my camera, and it has no effect if the lens already has an AF/MF switch. However for lenses that do not have an AF/MF switch then the button works as you would expect.

Hi Brian,

Ive assigned 'Focus Mode' through the customisation menu  to the DoF button (as a test).

Id like to switch between Auto and Manual Focussing  during video recording without using the lens switch

In that case I suggest you try the following steps.

  1. Assign "Pause movie servo AF" to the depth of field button. This stops the camera focusing as it would normally do.
  2. Find Electronic full-time MF in the purple AF menus, and set it to ON (Enable).

As a proof of concept I did the steps above on my EOS R6 & EOS R6 Mark II it works. I tried it with different lenses too, EF 40mm f/2.8 STM, EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM and RF 28-70mm F2L USM. Both bodies consistently can operate manual focus without having to switch the lens when movie servo AF is paused.

Thanks Brian, as a matter of fact thats how Ive been using it but I have two problems with it: As soon as u review a video or go to ur menu for some reason it immediately defaults to movie servo active and very often I forget to pause it again (there is no active sign to remind u its paused only when toggle on and off) and so the battery gets drained incredibly quickly also the AF keeps hunting.

So thats why I tried to assign a specific button to toggle it on and off but as I said for some reason its not working and Ive been through the manual and cant absolutely nothing related to how to use it.

So I guess Ill stick to suggested method for now

Thanks Again

Have you tried programming a button for [AF-OFF]?  It would only be effective when you’re pressing it in a way similar to using BBF.
