Does anybody have an idea what would caude the followingIMG_9575.JPG on my EOS T8i camera?

Do you have a budget for a new camera. Also what lenses do you currently have please use FULL NAMES of the lenses you have. Saying "Canon EF-S 18-55mm" is NOT a complete name. Canon has made 9 different version of that lens. A complete name would be "Canon EF-S 18-55mm F/3.5-5.6 IS STM" lens for example.

Scott,

Do you mean the big black blob on the right hand side?

I'm just guessing, but it looks to me like one of your lens aperture blades has not retracted.

Do you have another lens you can try?

That looks like a broken shutter curtain. You can get a quote from Canon on shutter replacement. But it will likely exceed the value of your camera.

Yes - that is what I am referring to.  I have tried other lenses with same result so I assume it is something inside the camera.

Your shutter curtain is broken.

This is the second EOS model (previously had T6i), that this has occurred and that's how I ened up with the T8i.  This is consistent with a local camera shop told me (repair would exceed cost of new camera).

Thanks, to all that provided feedback!

Look into the EOS R Series for a new camera. DSLRs and EF lenses have been discontinued.
