Anniej,

Certain functions are not available based on what shooting mode you are in.

First, we would have to know what shooting mode you are using; and,

Secondly we'd have to know what you are trying to do, the function you are trying to accomplish.

What is not to understandable about that? What you are trying to set, you can't do. Pretty plain and simple. In certain modes you can't set certain things. Select one that you can.

I’ve tried every shooting mode…and I get the same error.  Ideally, I’d like to use the automatic mode. And I just want to take still shots

Anniej,

In Automatic mode, your camera is going to control all of the settings. You, the user, can't make any adjustments. About all you can do is focus on something and point and shoot.

Anniej,

It sounds like there may be something wrong with your camera.

The first thing I would do is try to reset your camera back to its default settings.

If that doesn't work, you may need to think about sending it in for repair, but I'm not sure Canon does repairs on the T6 any more

It would very helpful to know what you are doing, or trying to do, that creates the error message.

Help someone to help you.  Try to explain how we can reproduce the same error message   Let’s start small.

What setting are you using on the Mode Dial located on the top of the camera?

What setting are you trying to change?

I suggest trying to use P mode on the top Mode Dial.  Do you still see the error message?
