my auto focus feature no longer works on either camera, is this a function of the camera body which is the only part with power, or a problem with the lens. Also can or how can it be corrected? any help appreciated. thanxz bob

Yes you could’ve possibly damaged the lens when turning the focus ring in AF mode. The AF motor could’ve come out of alignment. This is an older lens that uses the older and cheaper AF motor called Micro Motor. This AF motor has been discontinued by Canon and was in production from 1991-2011. STM lenses don’t suffer from this problem because of the focus-by-wire design. These newer STM variants focus much faster and quieter. Kit lenses aren’t worth repairing. The cost to repair will exceed the value of the newer STM variants of the lens. I don’t know your budget for a new lens. Canon offers multiple options for standard zoom APS-C lenses.

thanxz for the info, sounds like i need to buy a new lens. are the old lens of any value? maybe put them on ebay with a disclaimer that auto focus will not work must use manual focus

Older kit lenses don’t hold very much value at all unless it a newer STM or USM version. Example replacement lenses below. Canon has discontinued EF/ EF-S lenses. But some can found as existing new stock, used or refurbished directly from Canon. I would recommend at you get a newer USM or STM version of lenses. Older versions may not be serviceable by Canon if the lens were fail.
