Any ideas on why my camera turns on and works normally for a few minutes and then the screen turns into a bunch of lines and then it wont turn back on for a while??? I rarely use the camera ever.

Are you using a Canon-branded battery? What lens do you have attached? Try removing any attached lenses, any other accessories, remove the memory card as well. Remove the battery, let it sit for a bit, then re-install the battery and power on and observe.
If you continue to have issues, you should call up Canon and look at scheduling a repair.

You could try resetting the camera as well, but I doubt that will fix this issue.
Time to call up Canon and schedule a repair.
