Hi Photoganatic,

The EOS R7 can be updated to firmware version 1.6.0 without issue. If you own an EOS R7 and need to update the firmware it is available HERE. The firmware download from the website will include the .FIR firmware file itself and a PDF document that goes over the steps to update the firmware.

Customers do use the EOS R7 to shoot bird and wildlife photos. It uses our auto focus tracking from our mirrorless cameras, it is able to use our newer RF and RF-S lenses, and it is able to shoot 15-30 photos per second. If you are starting to shoot bird and wildlife photos the EOS R7 can be a good fit. If you are working at a more professional level you may want to look at cameras like the EOS R5 Mark II, EOS R3, or the EOS R1 since they have more weather sealing and are designed with professional use in mind.

I see your question has been answered ,so this is just me adding my recommendation.
Yes the R7 is excellent for birds and wildlife😀. IMO it's best feature is the eye-recognition tracking autofocus.Other features like high frame rates,in-body stabilization and weather sealing are also great

Thank you Hazel,

I had purchased an EOS R7 less than a month ago which came preloaded with firmware 1.3.0. After setting it up for bird/wildlife and a few custom modes for landscape and portraits I updated the firmware to 1.6.0 via the canon app. I had 2 successful outings and had taken around 1000 photos when in my 3rd morning observing birds it lost power while I was reviewing some images and would not then back on. I cut my trip shirt and came home to check the internet which is when I found a surprising amount of similar failures with this model. I was fortunate to be able to return the camera under a 30 day purchase guarantee however I am still looking for a bird/wildlife camera. I am nervous to purchase another R7 as I am confident I will have the same disappointment if I update the firmware.

I appreciate the information about the weather sealing, I was under the impression it was a professional camera and would have that. I guess I'll just wait for the R7 mark II to be announced and see if that fits my needs.

Thank you for the reply
