EOS R6, why canon ignore firmware updates?

I don’t understand why canon ignore firmware updates for this camera? Many software problems can be fixed like overheating and limited recording time, many features can be improved and upgraded like all-i codecs, af and focus stacking like in new models, but for company this camera and users of this product doesn’t exist anymore, can anybody from canon can explain me why you so greedy and trying to force me to buy a new camera even though this one works fine, just because…? #r6

I really don't know what you mean by "canon ignore firmware updates".  The latest firmware update for the R6 (mark I) was version 1.9.0, released 20 September 2024.  That's pretty recent, considering that that camera was released in July 2020.

If you're having trouble finding firmware updates, then I suggest you find and bookmark the product support web page for the R6 in your country.  You haven't said what country you're in, but if you were in the UK, for example, then your product support page would be https://www.canon.co.uk/support/consumer/products/cameras/eos-r/eos-r6.html?type=firmware

I have no idea whether the updates on that page fix the issues you mentioned, but you could at least try.  But don't expect too much.  Things like new codecs will often require new hardware, so hoping to get them for free in a firmware update is just not realistic.  You actually do need to buy a new camera if you want new hardware.

Don't make an idiot out of me, I know where to download firmware updates for the camera, update 1.9.0 is a minor update like the previous ones, there was only one major one during the whole time, don't justify "hardware features" when it's just the work of marketers based on the principle "you want to have no video recording limit of 30 minutes - buy a new camera", you twist what I wrote. I bought a camera, I buy accessories and lenses to it and to consider that I am asking for something "for free" is a completely inappropriate phrase, I just want the company to support its own product and not release once a year minor updates that just add support from new lenses and force users to pay them for the exact same camera but with the prefix mk2 in exchange for a couple of new software features, which came out two years after the release of the first generation, the camera is not an iPhone that people change every year in the race for trends.

Greetings ,

I don't think there was any ill intent behind my colleague's reply.  At the time of the R6mkI's release, there was a great deal of technology innovation occurring.  Additionally there was a changing landscape of laws imposed by the EU regarding camera type classification.

A camera needs to be considered as a whole.  The capabilities of its sensor, processor and hardware can be a limiting factor. This in turn can affect resolution, readout speed, light gathering capability and more.  The processor also has to be capable of handling the data throughput and the media has to be capable of capturing the stream.  Heat is also a factor in smaller devices.

Recording limits were imposed by the EU forcing camera manufacturers to define their devices as either photo or video.  If a device could record more than 29:59, it was then taxed at a higher rate.  You need to consider the implications of removing a feature such as this on a product which was already released.  It's not always possible for a manufacturer to unlock features or capabilities on an older product just because these functions exist later.

I have the EOS R6 Mark II RF24-105mm F4 L IS USM Lens Kit and it the camera's current firmware is 1.6. Under the support tab for this kit, it shows that 1.9.0 is the firmware update, but when I try to update it on the camera, it says it can't find the firmware on the card. I've tried reformatting the card on the computer and camera, but it still can't find it. Suggestions?

Greetings,

Since you are requesting assistance and inquiring about a different product than the product in this topic, can you please start your own thread.  This makes it easier for those of us trying to help and for others searching for solutions.  It's also not possible for you to mark a post as solved unless it's your own.   Thank you in advance.

Edit.  The current firmware available for the R6mkII is v1.6.0.   Firmware is not interchangeable between these body's. 😉
