EOS R6 Video corrupted to .DAT file

Hey everyone, so I had a recent wedding where a file corrupted of the bride walking down the aisle. It turned into a .DAT file 😬

I’ve been trying various free softwares, and even bought Wondershare Recoverit, but even with advanced video recovery it only turns into what looked like a really badly scratched DVD.

As a side note, it's an odd problem I've been having with the R6; no matter what battery or card I try it happens to corrupt some files with an error. I'm not sure what's causing the issue but the file is what I'm just focusing on recovering at the moment. Until I finish my switch to Sony, I'll have to use my tank-sized Blackmagic 6K Pro for weddings.

Does anyone have any suggestions for what to try next in recovering the file? Thanks in advance!

If Wondershare Recoverit only gave you a glitchy, unreadable file, you might have better luck with a tool specifically designed for .DAT file recovery. This guide  https://news.macgasm.net/tips/repair-dat-file/ could help you find the right method to reconstruct the footage. You could also try FFmpeg to extract playable content or use VLC Media Player to check if any part of the video is readable. Since you mentioned this isn’t the first time your R6 has corrupted files, it might be worth testing different recording settings or formatting your cards in-camera before each shoot to minimize errors.

It's not uncommon for files to get corrupted when something interrupts the recording, especially with issues related to power or the memory card. Since Wondershare Recoverit and other free software haven't done the trick, you might want to try more specialized tools for repairing corrupted video files. You can find here https://news.macgasm.net/tips/repair-dat-file/ detailed steps on how to repair DAT files, which could help you recover your footage. If those options don’t work, you might want to consider professional data recovery services, especially if the footage is crucial and the software solutions aren’t effective.
