EOS R5 Mark II - Finding information about a video file

For this post, lets focus on the Canon EOS R5 Mark 2 although most of the information here will apply to many other Canon cameras.

The camera can record video files in various formats, etc.  Part of that can be deduced from the file extension.  For example an MP4 file was not recorded in RAW format.  But, in today's example, I have an MP4 file that was recorded with a Custom Picture that I set up that has Gamma set to Canon Log 2 and Color Space set to G.Gamut.

I've tried QuickTime, exiftool, and MediaInfo to see if I can find any way to determine after the fact the various factors such as the above and I am not finding anything obvious.  Are these characteristics embedded somehow in the video file that are not obvious?

Aside from the file extension, is there a way to figure out if the file is in Canon's RAW video format or if CLOG2 or CLOG3 was used or other attributes?  If I can do this with an external program, command line based tool, or even in Premiere Pro, that would help me out.

Hi pedz,

RAW video and MP4 video are different file types, so you can tell which type it was recorded as by looking at the file extension. Files recorded in RAW video format will end in .CRM and files recorded in MP4 format will end in .MP4.

EXIF or metadata (which would list settings the camera was using when the video was shot) is saved to the file when you record it (whether in RAW or MP4 format), but not all programs can read it. Programs that can typically read EXIF or metadata from video files would be non-linear video editors like Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, or Final Cut Pro.

When the camera is recording .MP4 video files you can also enable news metadata XML files. When that is enabled when you record an .MP4 file the camera will create a corresponding .XML file that will have the video metadata in NewsML-G2 format. Information on enabling that setting is on pages 454-458 of the manual. If you need a copy of the current manual it is available HERE.

If you need assistance with how to enable EXIF data readings in your editing software and what format the program needs we would recommend contacting the maker of the editing software.
