Accepting what you say is correct (that only the Play and Trash buttons may have sand):
1. are they moving freely when you press or do they seem stuck?
2. does the camera turn on?
3. are any messages displaying?
4. take a stiff card like a business card, insert a corner at the edge of the buttons and try and remove anything that might be stuck.
5. what happened that makes you think they are affected by sand?
