purchased R5 mark ii online 1 Dec 2024. It shipped before 5 Dec (release date for firmware V 1.0.2)
As shipped, the camera is using Firmware Version 1.0.1. I am trying (unsuccessfully) to update to V 1.0.2.
I tried to update using EOS utility and then I tried to update using the CF-express card. In both cases, the error message seems to be saying that V 1.0.2 is >older< than V 1.0.1 and the camera will not go back to an "earlier" version.
Any suggestions?

OK, oops. I fixed it.
I deleted everything and started over. This time it worked.

I am having the exact same problem. I bought my camera in August, 2024. I updated the firmware to 1.0.1 when notified by Canon of a new version. Now I cannot update my firmware to 1.0.2. I am getting the same error as you had. The new firmware is older than what is on the camera. Impossible.
What did you delete? You say you deleted everything.

I got the same error message.
I put the fir file on my SD card and removed the CFe card in slot 1. It worked. Just be sure old fir files are gone and just 1.0.2 is the only one there.
Now, I've been using dual slot cameras for years and this is the first time I've ever had to remove a CF or CFe card, go figure 🤔 I've read, here on the forums, of others needing to do it, but I haven't until 1.0.2.

Thank you, FloridaDrafter. That was the trick that worked for me. I copied the ".fir" file to the SD card and removed the CFe card. This allowed the update to firmware 1.0.2 to succeed.
I have never had that situation before in decades of Canon camera use.

I deleted the file I had downloaded from the website, as well as the expanded file from it. I may have also reformatted the CFexpress card, but I can't recall for sure. Then I downloaded the file again from the website.

I didn't see any older files to delete and I had already formatted both memory cards. What worked for me was using the SD card with the updated file and removing the CF card. Not sure why, but it worked.

2 answers here mention removing the CF card. FWIW, I did not have to do that.
The first time through, I tried using the CF card and then tried to update directly from my laptop. Neither method worked. After the failures, I deleted whatever I had downloaded as well as any expanded version of those files, then downloaded a fresh copy. I was then able to update the firmware directly from my Mac computer. I did not try the CF card the second time.
