My Canon R5 produces a Timelapse MP4 that will not play on my new LG OLEDTV display (MP4 files from other sources play fine on the LG). The R5 firmware is old vr 1.2.0. Would updating the firmware update the MP4 codec or is there another solution to the problem?

The firmware update pages have brief descriptions of the most significant changes that the update provides.

Following @Waddizzle's lead.
The only mention of codecs I saw were in v1.3.1.
It doesn't mean it will work with whatever LG did to your TV.. I'd try a different playback App.
However, considering the other improvements which have been made since v1.2.0, I'd upgrade to the current FW. The R5 has become an extremely mature capable body. Canon has implemented many many improvements.
In case you haven't been following, don't panic 😱 when you see the security prompt to set a PIN. There's a check box that you can select to disable it on power up.
