EOS R5 ISO setting changes unexpectedly

I have an EOS R5 and typically operate in manual mode with ISO set to auto. Very frequently when I start to take a shot I find the ISO set to something other than auto.  The touch screen is active but set to the least sensitive setting.  I have seen similar postings here and elsewhere online but the threads seem to run out before a solution is offered that is useful to me.

The ISO doesn't change by itself from AUTO to a fixed ISO value, it needs some outside influence to make that happen.

Possible outside influences are:-

  • ISO value modified via touchscreen
  • ISO value modified using one of the dials on the camera - by default the mode dial changes ISO
  • A button is pressed that makes ISO changeable by some other action

You can disable the touch screen temporarily using the lock button and setting the lock to lock the touch screen. This is intelligent since once the touch screen is locked you can't influence the displayed settings with fingers, gloves, nose etc. But also if you press the MENU or Q buttons the screen is active again until you finish the change. You can also lock the control dials with the lock button too.
