EOS R & R6 "ERR O1" corrupting lenses

I have 3 EOS cameras: 2 EOS R's, and 1 EOS R6.  All 3 are showing the error message "Err 01".  I have looked on line and people are saying it is a lens contact issue.  It is true that if you switch to a different lens, it normally fixes itself(after you have removed, then reinstalled the battery.)

However, it started 1st on one of my EOS R's using my Canon 24-105, f4.  Then within a week, on my 2nd EOS R.  And within the 2nd week, it started effecting my EOS R6.  Then, the same thing started occurring using my Canon 24-70, f2.8.  A unique issue is that sometimes it doesn't happen when shooting at the widest aperture.  But as soon as I stop the lens down 1 stop, it occurs.

I have heard the only cure is to send the lens back for repair to fix an aperture issue.

I don't believe it is a normal prime lens issue, but rather a zoom lens issue on the new Canon EOS cameras.  I used both lenses on my older Canon 5D Mark II for several years without issue.  Then, I switch to the new EOS cameras and both lenses go bad within 2 weeks?  I don't think so.

I have cleaned the contacts on all the cameras, on the lenses, and the lens converters. And the error message still pops up.

Has anyone else found the same issues?  Or a fix?

I have the same problem. I use the EF 24-70mm f2.8L USM with the ring adapter on my Canon EOS R6. Today it started giving me the Error 1 message. My prime lenses work fine on the R6. The 24-70 works OK on my old Canon 5D MII. Strangely on the R6 it seems to take the photos 90% of the time but continues to show Error 1 screen.

I have cleaned all the contacts as specified by Canon with a dry cloth. On the camera, the adapter and the lens. I have removed the battery a couple of times and put it back. It does not help.  The problem persists. Canon will not accept a 17-year-old lens for repairs. I live in Colombia. The last time, I had to send the lens to California for repairs and it cost me $500. I am really annoyed with the lens I use most.

Hello Everyone. my first post here.

  1. I have a EOS6D and 24 70 2.8 USM EF Lens.
  2. I also have a Sigma 70-200
  3. I started getting Error 61 on my 6D. Since my 6D is old, I thought it's a camera issue, so ordered R6 M III.
  4. Along with a Canon Adapter for EF lenses.
  5. I now get Error 1 in R6 and Error 61 in 6D. Both of these errors go away if I shoot in F2.8.
  6. Even though Error 61 is supposed to be networking/wifi related, my wifi is always turned off.And this error also goes away if I shoot in f2.8
  7. My Sigma lens works well with both the cameras .

I am planning to ship the lens to canon for repairs(almost $500 estimated), but don't know what other options I have. I am used to continous shooting and with this error, I always have to restart the camera after each shot.

Very frustating. But thanks to all the forums, I survived a shoot yesterday by shooting it all at 2.8.

Please start a new thread of your own.  Your issue seems to involve a different camera.  Thanks, in advance.

With reference to the error o1 lens not communicating with camera. I have figured out way of allowing you to use the camera with that lens until you can get the lens repaired I actually shot a full wedding perfectly with this fix . Use shooting mode AV OR MANUAL SET APPETURE TO F2.8 as this is the largest appeture thr lens has no stopping down to d the apperure blades don’t need to moove therefore it’s the appeture blades movement is somehow causing the error and now without needing to stop down appeture blades you avoid the error. Shooting in f.2.8 you have the ability to manually control the shutter speed as fast as you like to compensate for f2.8 apperure combined manually adjusting iso either manually or set it to auto iso I have trawled the internet looking for the solution without success. So I hope this knowledge will save someone the unthinkable until it is repaired please coment it this works for you. Regards Bernard

Perhaps unrelated, but my R8 is a cantankerous beast sometimes and when the "Err 01" pops up, putting in a fully charged battery fixes it for me. I can put that same battery in my R100 and the R100 will be a happy camper until the battery runs out of juice.

I continue with my problem. My 24-70 f2.8/L continues to give me trouble. Strangely, it works in Shutter Priority with the ring adapter on the R6 without a problem. Images seem fine. I'm not confident that other features like autofocus are working properly. I am therefore not confident in using it and have retired the lens (costly retirement), until I can find a decent mechanic.

The lens only developed the problem after it came back from a repair (to change the motor), that I sent the camera to California for. It worked fine for about 8 months and the this issue started. I contacted the company in Los Angeles who did the repair on the lens. They asked me to send it back to them, and if it was their fault they would repair it free of cost. Courier costs however are very high. So the lens sits on a shelf. ☹️
