EOS M50 Mark II doesn't always turn on

brodunayo

I have a broken EOS M50 Mark II

I noticed that my M50 mark ii comes on sometimes, and it doesn't at other times. I have tried getting new batteries, cleaning the metal part of the battery with alcohol, yet it doesnt work. I noticed again that sometimes, when I insert the battery, the camera doesn't come on, but when I press down the shutter button, the camera comes on, and waits for a while before going off again.

Please, who has experienced this before, and what can I do?

Hi brodunayo,

I'm sorry to hear your EOS M50 Mark II isn't powering on. Since this is happening with multiple batteries they likely aren't the cause. The next thing we would recommend would be to load a different memory card in the camera. Sometimes if a card is malfunctioning it can prevent the camera from powering on correctly. If that doesn't resolve the issue then we would recommend attaching a different lens. Sometimes if there is a short in the lens it can cause issues like this. Swapping each piece one at a time can help narrow down which may be the cause.

If the camera still isn't powering on after checking those things at that point we would recommend sending the camera in for repair.

The Canon U.S.A., Inc. online repair portal allows you to set up service in a few simple steps. The repair portal gives you the ability to set up service for multiple pieces of equipment at once, and to receive a repair estimate in the majority of cases, depending on your model and issue. The portal also allows you to upload images or videos that will assist us in repairing your product. You can also select how you wish to be notified of the progress of your repair. The portal's service history section allows you to view all services that have been performed on any of your camera or video products since January 7, 2020.

I am surprised the EOS M50 Mark II is still serviceable but whatever any way I would recommend you look at a new R series camera in favor of spending a substantial amount on your EOS M50 Mark II. Get an estimate first.

I thought Canon cameras generally enjoy support for 10 years. I got my Mark II in 2022 and as it is a singular product line from Canon that has no direct or even functional replacement I look forward to using it - and potentially getting it serviced - for many years to come.

EDIT:
It looks like the M50 Mark II will be supported until June of 2030: https://canon.jp/support/repair/period#ml

Canon generally aims for a 10-year lifespan for its products, but this is not a guaranteed service period for all cameras. Professional models are supported for longer than consumer models and less popular lines like the M series may not reach ten years. Of course it's your choice.
