EOS 80D and external microphones

Just bumped my game up from iPad video to an 80D.  Unbelievable difference!  I have a Rode VideoPro microphone that I have used with my iPad and like a lot and I'm wondering if I can use it.  I have tried but get no audio so here are my questions

1. The Rode mic is battery powered.  Can you use battery powered mics with the 80D?
2. I have to use an adapter (TRRS?) to get audio out of the iPad.  Do I need the adapter for the 80D or can I just plug straight in to the 3.5?
3. Any tips, tricks or suggestions for good audio from the camera (or a mic you like that works well with the 80D)?
