A duplicate of every image shows up in my Photoshop catalog. Adobe tells me that this is due to the function of my camera (77D), which creates a JPG and a RAW file for every image, Previous versions of PSE didn't have that function, only uploaded RAW files. The files are all CR2, and the only difference in the file name is the number one is added to the second copy. So my question is: Does the 77D actually create two versions of the same image? Is this a camera option I can change in a 77D and do away with the JPG option? When I review the images in my camera there is only ONE file per image.

If both files with the same name are .CR2 files then they are not JPEG files. It sounds like you downloaded the files once and then downloaded them again.
You can configure the 77D to create both RAW and JPEG images on the card (Page 152 of your manual), but I do not think that is what is going on.

John, thanks for the links you shared and the suggestion regarding the SD card. . After checking those links, and others, I find that this IS a Photoshop Elements 2022 issue. It's actually been happening since Adobe released the 2021 version. Not only did they not send out any kind of fix for it then, they actually seem to have transported it right into their newest product. I upgraded from the 2019 version to the 2022 version on 4/11, and uploaded the first batch of photos on 4/14, all of which were duplicated. This happens when using a cable connection from the camera to the computer, and only when uploading to PSE. If I had checked Windows Explorer early on I would have had a better idea of what is causing the problem... all the photos I uploaded after I installed the new version of PSE have a companion file with the same number plus -1. I have uploaded photos to other editors with no duplicate photos being generated. Also, there are no duplicates when you upload to PSE from the SD card, which is actually the workaround to the problem. I don't know what kind of communication goes on between the import application in PSE and that USB connection to the camera, but that's where the problem seems to come from... a second copy of the image is sent by the camera (or requested by PSE), and Windows assigns the same file number because the are exactly the same, appending -1 to the second one. I've documented what I've found and will send it to Adobe - maybe they will put out some kind of update to correct the problem. Again, thanks for your help.

Sorry, did not mean to accept as solution... Photoshop will not allow you to upload additional copies of the same file if the have the same file name. In addition, If there is an image in the catalog with the same file name, Photoshop will skip it. In this case, one image will be named IMG_xxxx.CR2, and the copy is named IMG_xxxx -1 (the number 1 is added to the second image, so they have different file names). I agree that if they are both labeled CR2, one of them can't be a JPG. In addition, the image size is almost identical in both copies. I reviewed my camera settings, and I believe they are set properly. Attached is a screenshot. I think I didn't get accurate information from Adobe, but wanted to find out from others if they had experienced the same type of problem.

Like I said, I had the issue, though it was _2 and not -2.

I had something like this happen, and it persisted until I reformatted the card.

I had duplicates due to downloading the card twice. Thought they didn't download the first time. Reinserted the card and went thought the whole process of downloading.

I originally posted this question as it relates to importing images from my 77D to Photoshop. I have tried a different editing program, Canon's Digital Photo Professional 4, and have the same problem as I do with PSE. I've attached a screenshot of the result... every image has an exact duplicate! The only difference in the duplicate image is that is has -1 appended to the original image number. Could this be a problem with the SD card? I am using a fairly new SanDisc SDXC 64gb card, formatted when I inserted in the camera? Or, does anyone know of a camera option that may be causing this?

Not a camera problem. See the response to your other post. You downloaded the images twice; the operating system appended a "-1".
Get all the images off the card and reformat the card in camera.

Photoshop Elements does not assign a different file number or append the -1. If you have already uploaded an image, PSE will skip over it and not upload it again. I am attaching the Windows file that shows the upload. If you look closely, you will see that the original IMG # and the one with -1 appended loaded in the very same moment, at the very same time. Actually, more that two loaded in the very same minute... four images, including the ones you think I uploaded a second time, loaded at:11:13, eight loaded at 11:14, and so on... I can assure you that I cannot manually load one photo, restart the import process, and immediately upload a duplicate. I posted my question because I was hoping someone else had run into this same problem and knew the solution. I suspect that the RAW setting in my camera is not working properly - according to the documentation and to customer support, if you use that setting, it should only create ONE image. There is an option to create a RAW and a JPG and would upload as such. In this case, both the uploaded images are CR2. I initially thought it was a Photoshop issue, but realized it's not once I used a different editor.
