A duplicate of every image shows up in my Photoshop catalog. Adobe tells me that this is due to the function of my camera (77D), which creates a JPG and a RAW file for every image, Previous versions of PSE didn't have that function, only uploaded RAW files. The files are all CR2, and the only difference in the file name is the number one is added to the second copy. So my question is: Does the 77D actually create two versions of the same image? Is this a camera option I can change in a 77D and do away with the JPG option? When I review the images in my camera there is only ONE file per image.

If both files with the same name are .CR2 files then they are not JPEG files. It sounds like you downloaded the files once and then downloaded them again.
You can configure the 77D to create both RAW and JPEG images on the card (Page 152 of your manual), but I do not think that is what is going on.

John, thanks for the links you shared and the suggestion regarding the SD card. . After checking those links, and others, I find that this IS a Photoshop Elements 2022 issue. It's actually been happening since Adobe released the 2021 version. Not only did they not send out any kind of fix for it then, they actually seem to have transported it right into their newest product. I upgraded from the 2019 version to the 2022 version on 4/11, and uploaded the first batch of photos on 4/14, all of which were duplicated. This happens when using a cable connection from the camera to the computer, and only when uploading to PSE. If I had checked Windows Explorer early on I would have had a better idea of what is causing the problem... all the photos I uploaded after I installed the new version of PSE have a companion file with the same number plus -1. I have uploaded photos to other editors with no duplicate photos being generated. Also, there are no duplicates when you upload to PSE from the SD card, which is actually the workaround to the problem. I don't know what kind of communication goes on between the import application in PSE and that USB connection to the camera, but that's where the problem seems to come from... a second copy of the image is sent by the camera (or requested by PSE), and Windows assigns the same file number because the are exactly the same, appending -1 to the second one. I've documented what I've found and will send it to Adobe - maybe they will put out some kind of update to correct the problem. Again, thanks for your help.

Connect the camera to the computer or put the camera card in the card reader and see what the file list looks like in the DCIM folder on the card.

No duplicates on the SD card... it's the same as when I scroll thru the images manually on the camera's screen. So, where or how is that duplicate CR2 image being created? I found some reports of similar problems for Lightroom users, but there is no specific fix suggested. Something is happening during the export process. I'll follow up with Canon tech. support tomorrow. Thanks for helping eliminate possible problems.

Yes, it is somehow related to the import process. That is why the data for the regular and -1 files are the same. They are the same file with different names.
I don’t know if Canon will be able to help since it’s not a Canon problem.
Can you describe exactly how you are importing the files?
