EOS 5D Mark IV: MacBook doesn't seem to be linked to camera

Hi. New to this forum, but I just tried linking my camera (5d mark iv) & my computer in order to upload to Lr but the computer doesn't seem to be recognizing the camera? Not sure exactly. I went through the preferences in the EOS Utility 3 app & set it to choose Lr as the destination folder but the camera isn't showing up in Lr as as option & I've been told that's because the computer & the camera aren't properly linked but I have no idea what else to check to finish the process. Suggestions? Thanks!

EOS Utility can connect to the camera with a cable or wifi and then be used to remote control the camera and or download images from the cards or while shooting. It does this by putting the pictures in a folder of your choice on the computer.

Lightroom Classic has two capabilities, it can connect to a camera for "tethered shooting" using a cable and then as photo are taken they will be transferred in to Lightroom directly. Got to File > Tethered capture to work with this. Second option is you can configure Lightroom CC to automatically import from a specific folder, go to File > Auto Import to set this up.

You can combine the methods, so that auto import in Lightroom can monitor the folder that EOS Utility puts the pictures in an automatically imports them to Lightroom as they arrive in the folder.

You need to decide what you want to achieve.

Upload pictures from the camera to Lightroom

Just use a card reader and put them straight in to Lightroom from the card. Or use EOS Utility to transfer the pictures from the camera by cable or wifi (slow) and put them in Lightroom from the folder.

Transfer pictures to Lightroom as they are captured

You can use EOS Utility to do this with a cable or wifi and then use the auto import function in Lightroom to import them automatically. Or use the tethered capture function in Lightroom to do this, but only for cable connection.

Thanks for responding Brian. Yes, not trying to do tethered shooting. I'm definitely trying to get the photos uploaded directly to Lr. I saw you said using wifi for this is slow .. good to know .. makes sense. The problem seems to be that the linking process (via wifi) between the computer & the camera is incomplete somehow. This is my 1st rodeo w/ linking & I may well end up using a cable but will have to buy an adapter to do that, which I don't have yet.

I no longer have my EOS 5D Mark IV, but I regularly used it with Wifi connected to the computer using EOS Utility.

The process is to start on the camera menus, and go through the steps to connect to EOS Utility, when it reaches the stage of pairing, you need to run the EOS Utility program on the mac. Make sure you run EOS Utility not EOS Utility 3. This will then listen for the camera connecting on the same network as your Mac, and you should see a notification that camera was detected on the network in the toolbar at the top of the screen. You need to accept the connection and then EOS Utility will start, and you probably get the usual black start-up window. If you get to this point then the connection is good and EOS Utility can be used to download the images to a folder of our choice by selecting the correct option from the black screen.

Once the images are transferred to the computer, you can open the folder in finder, select them all and simply drag and drop on to Lightroom window and it will display the import dialogue.

that's all good info .. thank you! My problem may have been which program I ran. I think it was the EOS Utility 3. I'll go back & check & then try again. Appreciate your input!
