EOS 5D Mark III won't take pictures, LCD screen blank

Hello,

Yesterday when I went to use my camera I noticed that it would not take a picture.  I first tried checking the SD card and it was seated properly.  I then figured I would try removing the lens to make sure there wasn't a connection issue, when I went to turn the camera back on it acted like it was dead.  I removed the battery and re-installed it and the camera turned on but still wouldn't take the picture. I can't see through the viewfinder that it's acting normal but will not take a picture. I then turned it off again and it would not turn back on unless I removed the battery and replaced it back in. I am using genuine canon batteries and I tried several to make sure, I then also noticed that the back screen will not turn on. I wanted to look through the menu options but couldn't see anything to be able to do it. Before I look at sending it in or buying a different body, I thought maybe someone has had this issue as well and can tell me if they figured out what it was or what it took to get it fixed by Canon.

Hi 5DUser,

Since the same thing is happening with multiple batteries, and the menu isn't coming up when you press the Menu button, the camera most likely needs repair. There isn't a way to customize or disable the Menu button, so the camera should always respond when you press it. Along with that if the camera is having issues turning on fully with multiple batteries that indicates an issue with the power system in the camera itself.

The last thing to double check would be to load a different memory card in the camera to see if the same thing happens. Sometimes if the memory card is malfunctioning it can cause issues like this. If the issue continues with a different memory card we would recommend sending the camera in for repair.

5DUser,

Have you checked to make sure that your battery compartment door is closing completely and properly? Also, have you checked your battery compartment to make sure that no foreign object has gotten in there?

Thanks for the replies, I was able to figure it out that night.  It was indeed the memory card that was bad, I didn't think to try that at first but knew it could cause some issues if bad but when the screen wouldn't turn on and the power wouldn't after turning it off I didn't think at the time it could be the card.  Tried a new card and it was fine.
