EOS 40D - menu won't appear

I've recently moved home and my camera was in storage for about 2 years.

I have recharged the battery and replaced the small 'disc' battery and the camera seems to function except that nothing appears when I hit the Menu button.

The LCD screen itself will display the Sensor Cleaning message when the camera is turned off so I'm assuming it is not a screen issue.

Can anoyone help please?  Thanks in advance.

Does Live Mode work?

Is there a sensor that turns off the screen when you have the camera up to your eye? sometimes that gets blocked.

Many thanks for replying

I can't switch to Live View shooting (if that is what you are referring to) as I need to access the menu to set it up.

I can't see any sensor which might need cleaning I'm afraid.

What mode is the camera set to. I also own the EOS 40D. I’m not sure if live view is enabled by default or not. I think in these older cameras it’s disabled by default. I don’t have my camera near me to check if it is. But you can press the set button to use Live View if it is already is set up. But the camera must be set to the creative zone ie (M, Av, Tv, P & A-DEP) modes. It doesn’t work if it’s set to the basic zone ie Full Auto or any other Automated shooting mode.

I own the EOS 40D and it does not have a sensor that detects if you are looking through the viewfinder. To turn the rear LCD Screen off. Also live view must be first enabled through the menu system first before it can be used. Then the camera must be set to the creative zone ie (M, Av, Tv, P & A-DEP) modes. For live view to work at all. To enable live view you must press the set button. Exposure simulation by default is disabled and must be enabled in the camera menu. The camera is too old to support on sensor AF. You must press the AF-ON Button to AF. This drops the mirror and uses the dedicated viewfinder AF system to AF. But this must be enabled in the menu system for it to work. The info button will turn the on rear LCD screen to show the current settings.

That's correct - even if I have it in creative mode I can't enable Live View without the menu.

I've tried the menu button and the info button but nothing is showing on the screen on the back.  Is the fact that the screen shows the Sensor Cleaning message an indication that it is working?  Is it then the menu button which is not effective?

Thanks for you advice

Take both batteries out and close the door. Then press the shutter button for 30 seconds to drain the power still in the camera. Then see if the camera works correctly. Note lenses equipped with electronic focus rings such as Nano USM, STM and early Ring Type USM Lenses such as the EF 85mm F/1.2L II USM lens. Keep the electronic focus ring powered all the time in live view with the camera set to One Shot. As long as USM Lens Electronic MF is enabled in the camera menu. This is usually enabled by default.

I've done as you suggested and drained the power and then replaced the batteries, but still when I press the menu button nothing appears on the screen.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Does the camera work with the lens and CF Card removed. If not then you’ll be looking into a new camera.
