Constant focus shift on tap to focus

I have my R8 in tap to focus mode. When I move the focus square by tapping on the center of my screen, the square very frequently will just shift on its own if I do not immediately shoot. Most often it shifts to the far-right side of the screen. I am constantly having to drag it back to center.  How do I keep this from happening? I am using an EF lens with an RF/EF adapter.  Could this have anything to do with it?

Are you using the rear display exclusively to control the camera? For acquiring focus on a subject? For firing the shutter, too?

I am using the rear display touchscreen to set the focus point. I do not use it to fire the shutter. However, it just occurred to me that I am looking through the viewfinder also as I touch the screen and take the shot. Could it be that the proximity of my face to the screen is causing the focus point to shift?

Yes! The touch screen can be setup so that  the top left corner can be used for touch control. Instead of the entire screen, you would only need to use a portion of it.
