Considering buying Canon R6 Mark II for animal eye tracking, autofocus with Sigma 60-600m EF mount

Hello everyone, I've been considering buying a Canon R6 Mark II, mainly for the purpose of its animal eye tracking auto-focus, to go with my Sigma 60-600m EF mount. I know this lens will work with an EF to RF mount, however I also have a 2x sigma teleconverter for the lens and was wondering if the auto-focus will still work with the lens, adapter and teleconverter all together. Any information on the mentioned equipment will by extremely appreciated.

Hey Ben,

I use the 60-600mm on my R6 MKII with the Canon EF to RF adapter but never thought of adding a 2X Extender into the mix.

I did have to update the lens firmware to resolve some focus racking but once I updated it was perfect. Have you thought about going to a local shop and testing it out. As much as possible I would stick with Canon extenders and adapters just to ensure you have good communication between the body and lens.

I'd be interested to hear how this goes, hopefully some here has tried it,

I have used the Canon EF 100-400 Mark II with EF teleconverters and an EF to RF adapter and it worked perfectly.

Hello, Ben!

As others have mentioned, you shouldn't have a problem with AF, at least any worse than any other EF adapted lens. I can't vouch for the Sigma teleconverter but don't recommend any 2X, Canon or otherwise. Some folks consider them adequate for their needs, but they don't meet my standards. Now, that's not a slam on the folks that use them, just my preference 🙂

Another option with the R6 mark II, rather than the 2X teleconverter, if you do don't mind shooting in JPeG from time to time, is the digital teleconverter feature in the camera, "digital tele-con" in the Shooting 1 menu. It's actually pretty good and at least as good as a tele con and definitely cheaper, LOL!

This is a full frame image (6000x4000px), reduced for posting, taken with an RF 100-500L, digital teleconverter set to 4X magnification, so it's effectively a 2000mm shot. Click the images and make them full screen 🙂

Just another option and something to think about when you get the R6 mark II 🤔
