Canon M50 intermittent noise with Rode Wireless ME

Hey guys,

I have a weird problem when I use a rode wireless ME microphone with my M50 camera. While recording there is some noise appearing and disappearing after a while.

This noise is nonexistent when I record videos with my phone while using the wireless mic. 

I've replaced the cable that connects the rx with the camera. I've tried different sound settings both within the camera and in the mic. But no success. Whatever I do this noise is still there.

There is a recording attached so you can have a better understanding what I'm talking about.

Do you know why I have this problem only with my camera and not with my phone and do you know how to fix it?

It may be cellphone interference. Try separating the phone as far as possible or put it in airplane mode.

If the above doesn't help, try disabling Wi-Fi in the camera. It sounds like some sort of radio interference to me.

Is the microphone stereo? What about the cable connecting it to the camera? The jack on the M50 is a stereo jack, so the cable you plug into it should have 3 conductors. If it only has 2, that may be the issue.

I turned off the Wi-Fi, but at the six-minute mark, the same noise appears.

I don't think that this is the problem because, with the conductor cable, the camera does not record audio at all.

Isn't that how you're getting the noise - with the M50 recording audio through a cable connecting the RODE receiver to the camera?

Actually, R0DE's own site provides a photo of the cable, which I can see has 3 conductors, so that shouldn't be the issue.

You might try recording audio from another source like an MP3 player using the same cable you use with the R0DE. If you don't get the same kind of noise, then you know the issue is with the wireless microphone (which could still be caused by RF interference from an unknown source rather than a problem with the unit itself, but at least you would know it's not the M50 that's at fault).
