AF is the best. You have to press lightly half-way on the shutter button to focus. Then press all the way when you see the scene focus in the viewfinder. Have you looked at the User Manual?

OK, guy, it is best to walk before you try to run. First reset your camera to factory. Menus, tools, clear all settings and all custom settings. Consult your manual if need be.
Now don't set anything don't touch anything except, put the mode dial to P mode. ISO to 200. Lens switch to AF. Now go outside on a nice sunny day and try some general shots. Try different subjects at least 10 to 20 feet away. If it works as it should giving you beautiful photos, there is nothing wrong with the camera.
