My 14 year old son recently bought himself an EF 70-200 lens for his Canon Rebel T100. He is taking photos of his friends high school sports teams (action shots). I would like to surprise him for his birthday with an upgraded body. Any suggestions for not breaking the bank. Maybe under 1,000. He says the rebel t100 is not great.

One thing I can say, I have been interacting with the kids at USD 231 for 30 years or so and they all use Rebels. I suspect they will continue to do so for several more years to come. You can get him into a new or used Rebel T8i for around half of your quoted budget. No adapter, no new system to learn. I suspect like my kids he will be happy with it.
The savings could then be applied for a future "gift" of a new lens and when the rubber meets the road its the lens that make the photo. Not the camera.

One more thing did we confirm whether he has a photo editing program. Along with a new Rebel or even the one he has now, Canon offers DPP4 and it is free. I prefer Photoshop. His school may have PS in the Photography/Video class. An editor is more important than any camera or lens. Matter of fact it is the most important part of photography.
If given the choice of the best camera and the best lens made in the world today and no Photoshop or a bottom of the line camera and lens with Photoshop, I would choose the latter with Photoshop every single time. No question.
You can d/l the very good DPP4 form the Canon web site. Its a free d/l. 😊
