Camera recommendations for beginner photographer

Moose13

Hi! Just putting a post up, I am a beginner, photographer, and I mostly want to capture landscape/nature photos. I have a limit of about $500-$600 to spend. Just wondering what camera would be right for me. Thanks :)) Also, any beginner tips are appreciated.🙂

Issues with SDXC memory cards being used in Rebels seems limited to only the “entry level” ####D bodies, but not the “advanced beginner” ###D Rebel bodies like the T6I, T7I, T8i, etc.

I would recommend looking into a Canon Rebel T7. The EF-S 18-55mm F/3.5-5.6 IS II lens is in both kits. You can Click Here for a new camera and lens kit. Or you can Click Here for a refurbished camera body and lens kit. Does this budget include extra batteries and memory cards too.

Current Gear: EOS 5D Mark IV, EF 16-35mm F/2.8L III USM, EF 24-70mm F/2.8L II USM, EF 50 F/1.8 STM, EF 85mm F/1.8 USM, EF 70-200mm F/2.8L IS III USM, 430EX III-RT, 470EX-AI & 600EX II-RT

Retired Gear: EOS 40D, Sigma 17-50mm F/2.8 EX DC OS HSM & EF 28-135mm F/3.5-5.6 IS USM

Thanks so much! I can spend extra for extra batteries and memory cards.

Stick with Full Size Class 10 32 GB SD Cards (SDHC). DO NOT USE Micro SD Cards in an Adapter these cause the most problems. Also DO NOT USE one large 128 GB SD Card. Use multiple smaller 32 or 64 GB card. Also stick with major brands such as Lexar and Sandisk. Always buy memory cards from a reputable retailer. There have been many reports of counterfeit memory cards from Amazon.

  1. Stick to with a camera store or an electronics store for memory cards. Use multiple smaller SD Cards instead of one large one. Always stick with well known camera stores such as B&H Photo, Adorama and any local camera stores.
  2. Always shoot in the RAW Format. Also use Canon's free DPP photo editing software. A RAW File is NOT viewable without proper conversion to Jpeg.
  3. Avoid using AI Focus and AI Servo (Continuous AF). Stick with One Shot AF
  4. If you don't already know the exposure triangle. I would watch a few videos on YouTube to learn about it. Follow along with the video while using your camera.
  5. Practice with your camera before a large shoot.
  6. DO NOT under any circumstances turn the focus ring on the lens with the AF/ MF switch on the lens set to Autofocus. The kit lens (EF-S 18-55mm F/3.5-5.6 IS II lens) doesn't support Manual Focus Override (Manual Focus after One Shot). Only certain lenses support this feature. Turning the focus ring with the AF/ MF switch set to AF will cause damage to the lens. The lens name will say STM or USM on them if they support Manual Focus Override.
  7. Use Continuous Drive Shooting Mode

Again thanks again for the info and tips, I will keep all of this in mind :))

If you want a longer lens the EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM lens is a great compliment to the EF-S 18-55mm F/3.5-5.6 IS II lens. You can Click Here for the EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM  lens in new condition. You can Click Here for the EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM lens refurbished. If you want wider the EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM is a good choice. You can Click Here for the EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM lens. When you buy Canon lenses make sure the prefix says EF or EF-S. Canon makes mirrorless cameras too. Those lens prefixes say EF-M, RF or RF-S. Those lenses are NOT compatible with your camera.

@Waddizzle thanks for the correction. I didn't know that had fixed that problem.

I have a T7 and it is good for the $$$$. Plus, the 18-55mm lens offers a lot. There are some other lenses if you decide to to widen the scope of your photos.

You can get an EOS M50 Mark II refurbished from Canon for $560 US right now with a 15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 lens, which is a far more modern and capable camera than the T7 others are recommending.
