90D External Mic plug suddenly only records left channel

Michael_H

Recently my 90D has only been recording the left channel audio when using an external microphone. I am using the same set-up and equipment that I've used for years; there is no new equipment. Both L and R channels record when using only the camera microphone. I've reviewed the settings and do not see anything that would address or control this issue. Has my Mic input port gone bad?

Brian has provided the best advice.  As a last resort, you can reset the camera's settings to defaults and retest with 2 mics.  I don't expect a change, but at that point you will have confirmed a problem with the 3.5mm jack.

You can use MyCanon to start a repair request and get an estimate for the repair.  Then decide the next step.

Since the built-in mic is working and you can't set the camera to have different recording levels for left and right channels or switch to only one channel, then it is more likely to be something physical that is causing the problem.

Candidates include:-

  • the connector in the camera
  • cable from mic to camera
  • microphone

I'd try a cable and mic swap first as the other option is likely a trip to Canon service.

Thanks Brian and I did try those suggestions but with the same result. I still suspect the camera mic port.

Thanks for your reply.  When you get your camera back, if you could let us know how long it took from mailing to you getting it back, that would be really helpful for other users.  🙂
