60D Program Mode Shutter Selection

My question concerns program mode with 60d/ 18-55mm stm lens - my understanding is that in program mode the camera tries to use a MINIMUM shutter speed compatible with focal length selected, ie at 18mm...1/18sec...55mm...1/55sec approximately. When I tried it, at 18mm it selected 1/30sec which is ok, but at 55mm it selected 1/15 sec!!! way too slow for handheld at 55mm.  Does anyone have any ideas on this. I put ISO on 'auto' so it would not be a factor.  Thanks as this is driving me nuts!

I never used Auto ISO until I got my 6D, not I use it all the time.  It's really quite good.  If they put in ability to do exposure compensation in Manual mode I'd probably use it 100% of the time I wasn't doing studio work.

I used auto ISO on my 1D4 for a while but abandoned it when it over rode my flash settings & selected the Max ISO for all my photos one night.

Ouch.  I assume you didn't discover it until the next day?  Ouch.

Yes it was a big & unexpected surprise. Fortunately I was just shooting a parade in Cozumel & the photos were for on line use. You would think that by setting a reasonable ISO (I used 1600) & added a flash (Canon 430EX or 580 EX) the camera would ignore using Auto ISO but WRONG, it chose 12800.

Likewise, I rarely use auto ISO. I've come to know about this function when I read a debate about Canon vs. Nikon (a while back), and someone said that Canon auto ISO is "smarter" than that of Nikon because of this functions. 🙂
