Almost surely L lenses are made in Japan, only likely exception is the kit L lenses like 24-105mm some _may_ be made outside of Japan. For sure some of the other non-L lenses are made outside of Japan, some lenses are even made in multiple locations.

According to the date code ALL of the 24-105mm lenses that I have dealt with were manufactured in Utsunomiya, Japan.

The first letter in the date code on L lenses denotes where the lens was manufactured.

U = Utsunomiya, Japan

O = Oita, Japan

F = Fukushima, Japan

There is not a date code that starts with 'T' for Taiwan.

There are some "non-L" lenses that are manufactured in Japan, like my 50mm f/1.4, but all of the L lenses are made in Japan.  What "L" lenses are your friends referring to that are made in Taiwan?

Almost surely L lenses are made in Japan, only likely exception is the kit L lenses like 24-105mm some _may_ be made outside of Japan. For sure some of the other non-L lenses are made outside of Japan, some lenses are even made in multiple locations.
