70-300 4-5.6 has soft flat images

I have a 70-300 is USM 4-5.6 lens.  The lens take horribly soft, blown out and flat images... any known issues?

Going to Antarctica

Going to Antarctica but not getting off the ship. Any suggestions for a telephoto lens. I have Rebel Xsi getting T5i. How about a teleconverter? I can't use a heavy lens.

Better Lens

Need a better lens that can zoom images from at least half a kilometer but cost not more than $300. My camera is Canon Rebel t3

What filters can you use {besides a polarizer} on the Canon 300 mm 2.8 is ll lens?  I understand I needthe drop in 52mm filter holder.  

UV Filters

Is it worth the higher price for a UV filter, do they make that much of a difference with a higher quality L lens? What is a fair price to pay on a Quality UV filter?  I see them for as high as $300 plus.
