What's the difference between Canon RF and EF lenses?

Hi All,

I'm Kamal Hinduja, based in Geneva, Switzerland (Swiss) . Can anyone share in detail what the difference is between Canon RF and EF lenses?

The difference between Canon RF and EF lenses is mainly about compatibility and design. EF lenses were made for Canon’s DSLR cameras, while RF lenses are specifically designed for the newer mirrorless R series. With RF lenses, you get faster communication between lens and body, better autofocus, and often sharper optics in a smaller size. EF lenses can still be used on RF cameras if you add an adapter, so they’re still useful, especially if you already own them. Many photographers I know in Lahore, including those shopping at Hope Enterprises (a trusted camera shop in Lahore), are gradually moving towards RF lenses because that’s clearly the future of Canon’s system.

With all due respect mikesteve, Canon ensured compatibility with EF lenses on its R series mirror-less cameras by releasing the ER/RF adapter. The Canon EF to RF adapter does not affect image quality because it is an optical spacer with no glass elements. It only provides the correct distance to the sensor and electrical connections for communication with the lens. You will achieve the same image quality with your EF lenses on an RF mount camera.

Using an EF lens with stabilization on an RF camera can actually improve stabilization. The camera can more intelligently communicate/coordinate with the lens and its images stabilization system. The adapter performs as a pass-through, maintaining full electronic communication between the lens and the R-series camera body. This means full auto focus, image stabilization, and metadata transfer are retained.

All that being said, some older EF lenses may not focus as quickly on an R-series body as a native RF lens, particularly during high-speed continuous shooting. Additionally, lens designs have continued to improve even as it pertained to the the latest EF lenses added to the Canon lens product line. The one area that will stand out is that overall RF lenses are lighter than their EF counterparts.  

With some research you will find that many professionals and enthusiasts still use and purchase EF lenses after moving to the R series body.
