Full-time manual focus is not working: RF 70-200 2.8 FTM

R5 is at firmware 1.3.1, and AF operation is "SERVO AF". The lens is at firmware 1.1.0,  set to AF, full AF range, and stabilizer on. When I half-press the shutter, the autofocus engages, but the focus ring does not have an effect (as I expect it should for FTM). The focus ring also does not work after releasing the shutter button - but when I turn off AF on the lens, the AF rings work. Please help me.

I am not familiar with any RF mount lenses by Canon with RTM model numbers.

Are you referring the lens pictured above?

Welcome to the forum and sorry you're having trouble. It works fine on my R5 in One Shot or Servo. I'm pretty sure that all RF lenses have "focus by wire", which is required for MF Override, but I would still check to make sure your lens is supported. You do have to jump through some hoops to get MFO to work properly. First, look at page 440 of the R5 manual.

I have mine set up, using "Lens electronic MF" settings in menu AF 4. "Disable after one shot" is set to OFF; "One shot ->enabled" is set to ON: "One shot->magnify (magnify) is set to on, but this is a personal preference and doesn't effect MFO: and "Disable in AF mode" is set to OFF.

As best as I can remember, that is all I had to do. I don't normally recommend a firmware update, but 1.5.2 is available for the R5, and it's a good one, not that it will help your problem, it's just a worthy update.

I hope this helps,

Newton

Firmware 1.3.1 introduced a new menu item for both EOS R5 and EOS R6. In the AF5 menu on my EOS R6 I have an additional menu item Electronic full-time MF, this is set to OFF by default, but when set to Enable (ON), then the focus ring of lenses with electronic, aka fly-by-wire, focus rings can do full-time manual focus. Most RF lenses have electronic focus rings.

My camera is currently using firmware 1.5.2 and the same setting is present in the same place and has the same effect.

On my camera; when powered on, Electronic full-time MF ON, and an RF 28-70mm F2L lens fitted I can simply turn the lens focus ring at anytime to refocus it. This works in one shot and servo focus modes. If you press the shutter or back focus buttons the camera will do AF as usual. I found that I really needed this setting ON when using the RF 100mm F2.8L Macro IS USM lens. For macro pictures I often prefocus a lens so it is close to the right subject distance before I use AF.
