EF-S 24mm experience

Hi folks

I have an EOS90D and live in the North of England. I bought an EFS 24 mm lens a couple of years ago, mainly for street work. It has however, has little use as my family of lenses has grown. Today, I dusted it off and did some more reading and realised that I have a great bit of kit, that didn't cost a fortune and is extremely light and versatile. I'm not sure it will knock my nifty fifty off its perch, but its certainly a great day out lens.

Just wanted to share that with you and wondered if any of you guys have experienced the 24mm.

What do you mean by a 'baffle'?

Thanks Zak

That is quite different to most hoods. Is there a theory behind its design?

I"ve found one on ebay for sale in China for about £8 - its made from Aluminum.

Interesting!

I don't know about "theory" but I think the intent of the hood design was to keep the EFS-24mm f2.8 STM (and it's sister lens EF-40mm f2.8 STM)  a "pancake lens" that does not protrude significantly from the camera body - even with a hood attached.

It obviously does that. Question is, does it function as well as a real hood?

Hi

I took the 24mm for a walk around my Yorkshire lanes yesterday, with its new hood attached. But as someone with limited experience, the photos looked ok and I can't tell the difference.

I suppose what I need to do is to take some test shots,  on a tripod, with the same camera settings, and try and compare the outcomes. But as I said earlier, I don't have the depth of skills and experience to critically analyse photographs.

However - watch this space!

The second picture might look really interesting in monochrome.

That's a great point Lee. I live in a valley that was part of the industrial revolution and it's cluttered with old stone and steel structures from the Mills, Coal mines and canals. I will do a couple of circuits on a monochrome and post them.

an old Horse trough, which has surved and still has fresh water. I think of them like being 19th  century petrol stations! But I haven't been tempted to try the water.
