Hi, I am a beginner in photography. I have been looking for the best camera I can start with as a beginner, that is, my 1st camera and the Canon R50 ticked all my boxes.
However, I do not know whether the camera will work with 3rd party lenses like sigma and Tamron. Are there any good 3rd party lenses that will work with the canon R50? If there are, which do you recommend?
FYI, I'm not planning to buy a lot of equipment, I just want an extra lens other than the RF 50mm 1.8 and the standard kit lens.
I'm planning to get into videography later in the future but since I'm starting my journey, I thought it best to learn the basics of photography and videography.
Thank you in advance for your help.

The dealer was Canon.

If possible use the gift card for the case and SD cards and as deebatman316 suggested purchase the camera and lens from a reputable Canon Dealer.
Canon USA currently has the R50 in the refurbished store for $500. Pair that up with the RF100-400 and you will be slightly over $1000 with a much better lens.

In Amazon the dealer was Canon which is why I was confused.
If I purchase the R50 refurbished and lens you suggested, does that require and adaptor?

It must say Sold and Shipped by Amazon if not it's Gray Market. Which has NO WARRANTY in the U.S. Canon has the right to right to refuse repair.

No the RF 100-400 is the native mount so no adapter is required.
I have both the R50 and the RF100-400 and it is a good travel combination. Be aware that the body does not have as robust features as the higher priced bodies but it is very capable. The RF100-400mm lens ($649 US) has Optical Image Stabilizer up to 5.5 Stops of shake/movement correction which seems like it would be helpful in the Marine Biology field.
If you do decide to go that direction the other positive would be that the body and lens would be light and portable. The RF100-400 is a superior lens over most of the EF70-300mm lenses and much smaller and lighter. Also, if you decide to upgrade to another R series body the RF100-400 would be compatible.
Since this site is active internationally I am not sure where you are located, deebatman316 suggestion on where to purchase is significant. If you are in the states the one's he mentioned are well know and respected. And they ship quickly and offer warranties.

You have been so helpful. I'm located in the Caribbean but trying to ship to a friend who travels back home in 2 days so I was really hoping for the overnight prime shipping to make that deadline.
Thank you so much for explaining the benefits as well of this body and lens combo. Helps that you have the same. Based on the explanation about weight and shake/movement features I'm inclined to agree that this is perfect as I stand for hours at a time and capturing dolphins on a moving ship would require much focus.

"Camera gear stick with Canon Authorized Dealers." "In Amazon the dealer was Canon which is why I was confused."
Some of the info you are receiving is confusing perhaps not well explained or simply incorrect. Amazon itself is a authorized Canon USA retailer. No different or better than any NYC store perhaps better than some. It is the Amazon Marketplace retailers that may or may not be Canon authorized retailers. The problem is, although they must disclose this, they don't especially make it prominent on the web page. You must look carefully for it sometimes.
Any item bought from Amazon will be Canon USA and fully warranted and supported by Canon USA. Use your $200 gift card as you wish. Use your Prime.
I also don't believe you can buy Canon refurbs anyplace except from Canon USA directly. No store and not Amazon. I don't think any store or retailer has them.
And for a no cost extra tip, stick with Canon R and/or RF-S lenses if you're planning to use a R series camera.

Excellent point ebiggs! To EB's point, once you open an item there is always the sellers box on the right hand margin. Sometimes it's very clear, sometimes you have to dig. The picture below is a vendor, Jerry's Photo selling a R50 but not on the Canon Authorized Dealers list.
You mentioned a friend transporting it to you from the states, if it is helpful here is a link to Authorized Dealers: Canon U.S.A., Inc. Authorized Dealers
