Says no paper in Pixma922

My new Pixma 922 worked great yesterday - now trying to print from my iphone and it says no paper in bottom tray - There is! I feel it's due to the slider that won't budge - it's stuck on A4, I can't move it down to 'letter'.  Can we load paper in the top? It seems awkward to do so and it wouldn't pull the paper.  I hear it printing and then says no paper in tray! Help!! Hope I'm not wasting ink!
