Pixma tr7020a trouble loading auto document feeder

I just bought this printer to use the scanner. I need to scan more than one sheet of paper at a time and i've had no luck loading the auto document feeder, It doesn't register that the paper is there unless I lift the cover over the feeder and insert the paper farther than I think  it should go.. When it does recognize the paper it pulls through more than one sheet at a time.

The manual says absolutely nothing about loading the adf with paper, Anyone know the answer?

Hi,

The ADF should make a beep when the paper is loaded. If the printer is not detecting the paper or feeding it, further support or service may be required. 

 If the printer is in it's 1 year warranty, I recommend reaching out to Canon support for your service options. You will need to register your Canon gear HERE to access additional support options.

When I followed the Canon instructions with the utility, the printer worked but not the adf. I had to go into my computer and had my computer locate and add the printer and delete the one that was originally added by following the Canon instructions.  Then miraculously the adf worked.
