MFC455dw - will not feed document loaded on automatic document feeder, scan function enabled

Status monitor says "scanning" - but the ADF does not feed it.  I tried feeding it manually.  Also no results.  The store location, my notebook computer, is enabled and functioning.,

There isn't a method to "manually" feed documents through the ADF.  It should sense when a document is loaded but the feeding is automated. 

The first thing to test is load a piece of paper into the ADF and perform a copy function from the printer's LCD.  If that works, the printer's hardware is probably working normally.

The ADF works fine for copies.  

I no longer have personalized support options - I waited too long because I was just using the (excellent) copier function for my home office, scanner at work.
