PIXMA iP8720 2nd and later photos have a brown tint

Any help on this issue would be appreciated.  Here is my problem that has just started since I have had my iP8720 for several years.  I power up my windows 11 laptop and printer.  I am using a photo of my black lab as an example.  The first 4x6 print comes out perfect and matches the photo.  She is black as expected.  If I print the photo again the entire print has a brown tint and no longer matches the photo.  If I print the photo again, the brown tint increases.  Any photos I print have the brown tint and it applies to the entire print.

Here's my debugging steps that have not fixed the problem

  • Window11 64bit Home 24H2 laptop
  • The nozzle check printout is good
  • I cleaned the print head
  • I updated the firmware from canon website to 3.0 which added another problem that I am now locked out from the printer with the network print page has blank for the default password.
  • I deleted the printer drivers and installed the latest driver from the canon website (1.03)
  • I found that a power cycle on the printer will not fix the first print's brown tint
  • I found that a power cycle on the laptop will cause the first print to be perfect with subsequent prints have the brown tint
  • I even loaded the ip8720 printer driver on another Windows 11 desktop i have and it exhibits the same brown tint on second and later prints

I have burned through a lot of prints debugging this problem.  Has anyone seen this problem or have a solution?  Any help would be appreciated.

Does the printer have Canon ink cartridges installed? I ask because I know from experience that as a printer head hits up, some ink properties will change and the color/tint will change. Along that line is the ink old? You can check this theory by printing a tinted copy, and say in an  hour a print will not be tinted it is very likely the ink not a hardware/driver cause.

You called it.  You should be known as "The Oracle".  I printed several photos with a brown tint.  I waited several hours and made two copies.  The first one was good, and the second one had the brown tint.  I am using generic print cartridges which are about a year old.  I have been using them for years without any problems.  Could it be a problem with the print head as it's at least 3 years old?

Thank you for your suggestion.  I would have never thought of it.

It could be but the ink is more likely the cause. My last printer was over ten years old and the print head never went bad, however it may have been going that way.

When printing more than one or maybe two color prints, I received a lot of "cooling down" messages and it took over 30 minutes before I could print again. That was a sign the head was having troubles. Have you considered a new printer? One similar to yours, with five ink cartiridges is the The Canon PIXMA iP8750 which is over 200 dollars, however there are two cartridge Canons such as my MG3620 all in one that does a great job of printing color up to 8x10 on any type of photo paper. If printing larger the IP8720 would be my personal choice.
