To have a better understanding of your issue, please let everyone know the model number of your Canon printer and the operating system on your computer. Any other details you'd like to give will only help the Community better understand your issue.

It is possible that a security system or firewall is not allowing the printer to directly access the computer. As a test to make sure the scanner is working correctly, you will need to try and scan using IJ Scan Utility.
If you are running Windows, the program should have installed with the printer/scanner driver and on most MacOS systems, you can install the program by itself.
Please let us know in your reply if you were able to scan using IJ Scan Utility.
