PIXMA TR7020a prints OK but won't scan

Roger_AZ

Canon TR7020a:  Scanner is not found.  Printing documents from my Macbook Pro using the wifi connection works fine.  When attempting to open the Scanner, using  the Systems Settings > Printers & Scanners > Open Scanner mehod (which has always worked since I bought the printer), the Scanner window opens but is blank and nothing ever appears.  When using the Canon IJ Scan Utility Lite app, the utility window opens, but when I click on Auto or any other button, it searches for a scanner for a few seconds and then I get the "Cannot communicate with scanner" error message.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated, thank you.

You many need to install or reinstall the Mac setup driver. It is located here, make sure you match your current Mac OS to the driver.

Thank you for the suggestion.  I tried this several times without success, no change.  So then I deleted the printer from the list of Printers & Scanners, deleted all printer drivers from my Macbook Pro, emptied the Trash folder and started from scratch, as if I was installing a new printer "fresh out of the box".

I reinstalled the driver and now I have a disaster.  Now, when I Add printer in Settings > Printers & Scanners, I see the "Setting up 'Canon TR7000 series ...' window (like it's setting up the printer), but then it does NOT add the printer ... let alone the scanner.

Interestingly, I can print from my iPhone.  I guess that uses the AirPrint function of the printer?

Now what should I do ??

Did you take these steps before running the setup file?

Steps to Remove All Evidence of a Printer from Mac Pro

Remove the Printer from Printers & Scanners

  1. Open the Apple menu.
  2. Select System Settings.
  3. Click on Printers & Scanners in the sidebar.
  4. Find the printer you want to remove in the list.
  5. Control-click the printer and choose Remove Printer. Confirm the action.

Clear Printer-Related Files

  1. Open Finder.
  2. Go to the menu and select Go > Go to Folder....
  3. Enter ~/Library/Printers/ and delete any files related to the printer you just removed.
  4. Check ~/Library/Caches/ for any printer-related cache files and delete them.

Uninstall Printer Drivers or Software

  1. Go to the Applications folder.
  2. Look for any dedicated printer apps or drivers.
  3. If found, use the uninstaller or move the app to the Trash.
  4. Restart your Mac to refresh the settings.

I went thru this procedure meticulously and got the same result.  When I go thru the Add Printer procedure, I see the "Setting up 'Canon TR7000 series ...' window (like it's setting up the printer), but then it does NOT add the printer ... let alone the scanner.  If I go to System Settings > Printers & Scanners there are no printers listed.  While in that window, I click on the "Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax..." button, I just repeat the entire procedure again but there is NO printer added.  It's a vicious, useless, cycle.  But once again, I can successfully print from my iPhone.

I am seriously dazed & confused.

There is a full full installer package available listed under Sequoia OS.  You didn't mention what OS you were running?  Not sure if this will work under Tahoe but it's certainly worth a try If you're running that OS.

Tahoe uses AirPrint but there is an IJ scan utility lite available.

Right now there's a lot of inkjets relying on AirPrint under Tahoe ☹️ instead of having a dedicated driver.

I am currently running Ventura 13.7.8 on a Macbook Pro 15-inch, 2017.  And I downloaded the recommended driver package for Ventura.  Should I try a different version ?

I have tried using several versions of the Canon driver software, all with the same result:  now I can NOT use the Canon TR7020a for printing OR scanning from my Macbook Pro 15-inch, 2017 running Ventura 13.7.8

Every time I tried this, I followed the suggested procedure of deleting all printer related apps, caches, etc; then emptying the Trash folder, and restarting the Macbook Pro.  I also RESET the printer. When I then download and run the selected driver version, the Macbook Pro "sees" the "Canon TR7000 series ... Bonjour Multifunct" printer, but when I click the Add button, I see the "Setting up 'Canon TR7000 series ...' window, but when that disappears, THERE IS NO PRINTER ADDED.

Interestingly, I can Print & Scan from my iPhone xR using the Canon PRINT app, so I think the printer is OK, there is something wrong with my Macbook Pro to Canon communication.  This worked fine up a few months back.  I hadn't tried to use my printer until I started on my taxes.

HELP !!

Apparently, during all the deleting and reinstalling cycles of the software for the printer, I deleted the innate AirPrint driver.  Long story short, I had to reinstall the Ventura iOS, and that fixed the problems I was having.  I can now print and scan from both my iPhone and my Macbook Pro.  Thanks to everyone for your suggestions.
