PIXMA MG3022 How to change from color to black

Hi, I have a Canon PIXMA MG3022 printer.  I can't get the orange ink printer setting to move from Color to Black.  I ran out of ink and replaced the black ink cartridge, kept the color one there for I read you have two have both in for it to print.  Ive looked at a couple manuals and can't find the combination of button sequence to change the ink setting. The printer will go through the process of printing from the color side, but of coarse no ink goes on the page.   My hands are up in the air over this.  I've tried reseting the printer, cleaning the printer, read YouTube videos.  My arms are in the air, ANY SUGGESTIONS? Thank You  -Olympus.  P.S. I have a Mac computer.

Hi. I see no one ever bothered to reply. Can be very frustrating. On the print menu go to quality and media. Then click on the grayscale printing box. See if that helps.

Hi Olympus! Thanks for posting in the Canon Community Forum. I see that you want to change the Ink Cartridge setting for your PIXMA MG3022.

You mention that you want to be able to print with only the black ink cartridge. Before you can change the Ink Cartridge setting from your Mac computer, you will need to make sure that the MG3000 series CUPS Printer Driver has been installed. You can install the Printer Driver from the following website:

Once the webpage is open, please click on the symbol for Software & Drivers to the right of the picture of your printer. Then, make sure that the correct Operating System and Version are selected under the Downloads section. After that, you can click on the DOWNLOAD button to the right of the MG3000 series CUPS Printer Driver Ver.29.1.0.0.

When the package has finished downloading, please open it. Then, double-click on the symbol that looks like a cardboard box. After that, you can follow the instructions that pop up to finish the install.

When the driver has finished installing, you will need to add the printer to your computer’s list of Printers & Scanners. If the printer is already added, I recommend that you delete the printer, and add a new copy.

If your computer is running one of the latest versions of MacOS, please follow these instructions:

1. Click on the Apple icon in the top menu.
2. Click on SYSTEM SETTINGS.
3. Click on PRINTERS AND SCANNERS in the left column (may need to scroll down to find it).
4. If your printer is on the list, click on the Canon MG3000 series.
5. In the window that opens next, click on the option to Remove or Delete the printer.
6. Once the printer has been deleted, click on the Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax button in the Printers & Scanners window.
7. Give the Add Printer a minute to list all your printer options.
8. Click on the printer. If two options pop up, select the one that is listed next to Canon IJ Network.
9. Click on the box (option) marked USE and then click on SELECT SOFTWARE.
10. Click on the Canon MG3000 series in the list that appears.
11. Click on the Add button.

If your computer is running an older version of MacOS, please follow these instructions instead:

1. Click on the Apple icon in the top menu.
2. Click on SYSTEM PREFERENCE.
3. Click on PRINTERS AND SCANNERS.
4. If your printer is on the list, click on the Canon MG3000 series and then click on the minus ( - ) button on the left side of the window to delete the printer.
5. Once the printer has been deleted, click on the Add Printer, Scanner, click on the plus ( + ) button on the left side of the window.
6. Give the Add Printer a minute to list all your printer options.
7. Click on the printer. If two options pop up, select the one that is listed next to Canon IJ Network.
8. Click on the box (option) marked USE and then click on SELECT SOFTWARE.
9. Click on the Canon MG3000 series in the list that appears.
10. Click on the Add button.

When a new copy of the printer is added, please go back to the Printers & Scanners window, and do the following:

1. Click on the Canon MG3000 series in the list of printers.
2. Click on the OPEN PRINT QUEUE option.
3. When the Print Queue opens, click on the symbol that looks like a mechanical gear or set of tools.
4. In the next window that pops up, click on the Utility tab.
5. Select the option to Open Printer Utility.
6. When the Printer Utility window opens, you can click on the menu near the top of the window and choose Custom Settings.
7. In the Custom Settings window, choose the Ink Cartridge Setting.
8. Change the setting to BLACK ONLY.

After the Ink Cartridge Setting has been changed to black only, the printer will only use the Black Ink Cartridge (for every print job). If you try to print something that has color in it, you may get a brief notification reminding you that the Black ink cartridge will be used, so the quality may be affected. You can bypass that message to continue printing.

If you do want to start using the color cartridge again, you will need to go back into the Ink Cartridge Setting and change it to Both Color and Black.
