Can the Canon Pixma MG2522 print photos regardless of what paper material is use, whether it is matte, glossy or just a plain piece of paper that is used?

On an inkjet printer, like your MG2522, you can print photos on a lot of things. Plain paper, like copier paper and ordinary card stocks, is far inferior to inkjet photo papers, like gloss or matte, if you want nice looking photos. Their coatings keep the ink mostly on the surface, so you get the full color and brightness. Plain papers allow the ink to soak in, so you lose a lot of color.
It depends on what you want the prints for.

Would you recommend any brand of printer paper for photos?

If you want glossy, then it's Canon Photo Paper Plus Glossy II. Otherwise, Canon Matte Photo Paper.
