I understand that a full ink pad is the death knell of Canon printers. Replacement and reset is way too expensive.
Is is possible that the scanner remains functional even though the printer no longer is?
If this is true, I'd much appreciate a link to a thread that discusses this or at least the search terms that will reveal it.
thanks

Thanks for letting us know what Canon product you've got. The PIXMA MP980 is an older model which we have retired. While that means that Canon USA no longer offers direct support for it, your friends here in the Canon Community are welcome to offer suggestions!
You can also speak with a Canon Upgrade Program specialist to help you score a modern replacement that would meet your current needs at a discount. You can reach them weekdays and Saturdays at 1-866-443-8002.
Hope this helps!

I have little respect for business models that adhere to the motto 'ending is better than mending.' It satisfies the investors but not the user/customer community.
I will wait a while in hopes of a helpful reply before I trash the MP980 and also my tried and true IP4700, both of which have reached the end of life dictated by a factory reset of the full ink pad message after replacing/rejuvenating the ink pads.
Right now I'm leaning towards a HP laser printer without a scanner, which I don't need. a VueScan has kept my Epson Perfection 636U scanner in drivers that work even though I purchased it in 1997 when Windows 3.1 was my operating system.

@baumgrenze - I just went through the same thing with my MP990. I found info and the v3400 service tool to reset my ink pad counter at PrinterKnowledge dot com. Currently I'm trying to find replacement ink absorber pads for the MP980/990 with no luck. I'm not sure if cleaning them is an option or if replacing/cleaning is even necessary. I can see part of the absorber pads in the bottom of the machine and I can tell they are not completely saturated. Good luck.
