Canon G6050 shows error code 5100

The printer is highly erratic.  It will sometimes print a couple of sheets but then the error code comes up, there hasn’t been a paper jam.  I can sometimes resolve it by switching the printer and/or my phone on and off again, but it only ever prints a couple of pages before the error code returns.
