Unable to update R5II firmware from 1.0.1 to 1.0.3

With my previous Canon cameras this has been a simple process. With the R5II it's been remarkably painful.

I downloaded the firmware 1.0.3 dmg file from Canon support page but it will not open on my M1 MacBook Pro with latest version of Sequoia installed. Downloaded several times. File just won't open. All other Canon software file updates that I downloaded will open, but not the firmware file. This prevents using a memory card or EOS Utility to perform the update.

I used an older Intel Mac with Monterey installed to download the same dmg firmware file from the same URL and it opens without any problem and I can see the firmware file which has "103" in the title name. I followed the pdf instructions (same as always) and copied the firmware file to the root of a card that I just formatted and inserted the card.

Went to Firmware in the R5II menu and it shows I have v1.0.1 but when I click on it, I get a message that "Firmware older than Ver. 1.0.1 is on memory card. Delete old file and update using later version."

Any suggestions on how to proceed and perform what should be a 2 minute task that I've spent over 30 minutes trying to accomplish?

Try using the Camera Connect app from your phone/iPad/tablet instead. If you don't have it, you can get it at https://canon.us/cc

Just talked to Canon support. While they were looking up the issue, I decided to try removing the second card that was inserted... wondering if perhaps the camera was looking at the wrong card for the firmware file... and the process now works.

Around the time I discovered this issue, the tech support told me there is a known issue with the R5II that you cannot update the firmware if you have two cards in the camera. Easy fix, but annoying and should obviously check both cards for a newer firmware.

He also noted others with Sequoia unable to open dmg files. He mentioned that the Windows version is a zip file and that downloads and opens just fine. I selected the Windows option and, predictably, the zip file downloads and opens immediately. Can't open Mac file on my Mac but the Windows download is perfectly accessible. Oh well!

Hope this helps anyone else who may be having similar issues.

Greetings ,

Check the "disks" checkbox under Finder properties so that when you click on the DMG it unpacks to your desktop.

Firmware is operating system agnostic.  You can download v1.0.3 for Windows, unzip it, put it on your card and update your camera.  The .FIR file comes in different wrappers but it's the same file regardless.

Format your memory card in camera before use.  If the update utility states, there's an older version present, you must have an old .FIR file on the card.  Only have one card in the camera during the upgrade process.  Use the quick control dial to change focus to the ok menu then press set to execute.  Once the update starts, don't touch or press any buttons until the update completes.

Yes, I found the same. Firmware at the root of the CFexpress card (slot 1) didn't find any firmware. But on the SD card (slot 2), all worked a-ok.

The DMG file works on Sequoia, it just mounts onto your desktop so it's not obvious.

Nice save! Great that the older Mac did the trick.
