Digital Photo Professional v4.12.60.0 crashes when trying to edit .cr3 file

I've been using DPPv4 for a few years now, editing cr2 files without any issue other than general slowness.  Bought a new camera which uses cr3 format, and now selecting an image to edit crashes DPP.  cr2 and jpg still work fine.

 

There are five entries in the Windows Event log for the crash:

The last one is a false alarm - all of the disks are local (C: for the application, 😧 for my data).  Windows is saying there aren't any errors on either drive.

 

I also tried running the application as an Administrator, but it too crashed attempting the same steps.

Welcome to the forum.

 

A number of us here use DPP with .CR3 files, so it is not a basic problem with DPP.

 

There are higher requirements for .CR3 files.

I think what John is trying to point out is your hardware.

I'm not surprised that it's slow because of my CPU, but the crashing is unexpected.  I was expecting memory to be the bigger concern, but it hasn't worked out that way.

 

So a newer machine is needed for photo editing.  Thanks for the advice.

 

 

 

 

It could also be memory related depending upon how much video ram is on your video card and how much it has to pull from the system ram leading to your PC relying upon "virtual" ram.

 

The files from my 1DX III are far more processing intensive than the 1DX II and earlier files.  I have two HP Z series workstations (Z 820 and Z 840) with twin very fast multiple core Xeon CPUs, Nvidia workstation graphics cards, and at least 256 GB of ram per CPU that handle the CR3 files OK but they are noticeably slower especially when doing significant NR processing or using the clone/stamp tool compared to CR2 files.  My HP Z book laptop will handle CR3 files but with its single 4 core I7 processor and 64GB of RAM it is painfully slow with CR3 files compared to the Z workstations.

 

DPP still makes very little use of the CUDA cores on Nvidia cards, my Z 840 workstation has a pair of Quadro 4000 video cards with 1,664 CUDA cores per card and GPU utilization never goes above 3% and this appears to be other processes and not DPP according to process manager even though the Nvidia manager shows that DPP is running on the CUDA cores.  Still waiting for Canon's software partner to address this issue and take advantage of available resources.

"A newer machine is needed for photo editing" Partially true.
To be more specific I smashed against a similar issue a while ago after the upgrade from 4.7 to 4.9 and 4.11 on my desktop Computer. It has an AMD Phenom X4 , Win10 and 12GB RAM with a Nvidia 1055ti GPU, definetely not the last speed monster but it can run pretty everything except DPP newer than version 4.7.
Infact these newer releases use some specific intel CPU features that broke compatibility with older AMD processors, as you can notice from the system requirement it clearly states you need that specific brand CPU.
From forum/groups I figured out that on recent AMD ryzen series this crash is not happening, despite the system requirements does not state anymore "compatible" for the CPU, so theorically you should now use only Intel CPU.
I had at home an older and slower computer, it has an Intel pentium dual core e5400, Win7 and 4GB RAM, intel shared graphics.
I tried Canon DPP 4.10 on it, this run deadly slow, but never crashed.
So basically you need a newer CPU or an Intel processor, if you apply both it is better.
