DPP4 crashes when loading newer images with seemingly no differences

SockMuffin

Whenever i load up DPP4, and click on a folder that contains CR2 files from my recent trip to Japan a few months ago, it decides to crash. I found another folder with some pictures i took more recently, about a month later, and they seem to load fine. i then transfer one file from a month ago in japan, and it immediately crashes. these photos from japan have loaded fine in the past, i just wanted to revisit them and it seems that now they do not work. i did not change the location of these files since, and they are stored directly on my disk. i have checked the raw files and they all use the same firmware version, and i downloaded the latest version of DPP4 to no avail. these photos were obviously originally on an SD card, but it is a high quality one that i doubt would be corrupted. besides, as i said, these files have not changed location since when they last worked.

My PC should be up to standards with the program, as it is an HP Envy 17 Laptop with 32GB ram, and an External RTX 2060

please help this is so frustrating ive been spending the past 4 hours trying to troubleshoot this

Use a file host and share one raw file that seems affected.

Was the same camera used to make the CR2 files in Japan? Is the same lens information loaded into DPP?

It might be worth trying to clear the DPP image cache. I use macOS and do not know where it is stored on Windows. I hope some of this might be helpful anyway.

On macOS, sometimes such problems may be fixed by clearing the cache. https://cam.start.canon/en/S002/manual/html/UG-13_Setting_0010.html#Setting_0010_1

Also, on macOS, it seems to me to help to exclude the DPP cache from timemachine backups.

please note that although one image appears to have been taken in 2020 that is purely because i had not changed my camera's date settings since after i took it, im not sure how i would change that now that it is changed. i can assure you it was not taken in 2020.

I will attempt clearing the cache, although i have already uninstalled and reinstalled the program

the camera and lens are both exactly the same, and anyways the photos used to work

TheOneThatCrashedIt in DPP on macOS, screen grab at 400%. Version 4.21.10.0

Downloaded and opened both on macOS DPP4.

The one identified as doesn't crash seems to be "missing" whole lower half of image. Nothing I do shows data.

No matter where I place the mouse RGB=0,0,0

It is just underexposed. The black level is 2049 and the dark area has almost the same value.

OnT, I see no problems with the raw files.

Have you tried copying the files to a new folder (not a duplicate) and then importing them into DPP4.  It sounds as that somehow you have a somewhat corrupted folder.  I've not worked with Windows for a few years, so it might be a stretch.

Uninstalling DPP in Windows via the Control Panel does not fully uninstall everything.  Not sure of your computer comfort with finding hidden files and REGEDIT, but there several hidden files and registry entries that are not removed.  The hidden files retain preferences and other items that could be a problem.  The free version of REVO software might be needed if you want to uninstall or a quick search will show you which files should be removed for a fully clean reinstallation.   Also free is Microsoft PC Manager, but I didn't find it quite as effective.  CCleaner also has a trial version.  You really have to be careful with MS PC Manager and CCleaner as their default sometimes is more aggressive that you really desire.
