Hi Folks
Currently on holiday in the Outer Hebrides with my EOS 90D - approx 18 months old. I now have a small number of lenses; 2 primes, a zoom and a small wide angle. Using my wide angle efs 10-18mm I became increasingly frustrated with the lens hood encroaching on my shots at full zoom. So I ended up taking it off.
So Q1: am I doing something wrong?
Q2: all my hoods are different shape and size - so who decides whats the best design for a lens and why?
Q3: serious question - why do we need a hood apart from cutting out glare?
Thanks
Ramsden

The Canon-prescribed EW73-C and the JJC LH-73C (what I have) are correct for the 10-18 lens. They are identical petal-shaped hoods. If you're not using one of these, you WILL get hood encroachment. They are both bayonet-mounted to the lens and cannot be put on the wrong way.
Whether or not a hood is effective at all for very-wide lenses is another story, except for bump protection. To not encroach, they are very shallow and are limited in stray light shielding (flare), especially at the sides where there is hardly any petal at all.
Perhaps you should be looking at a circular polarizer filter for reducing glare. This works very well.

Thats really useful. I think, in my ignorance I just ordered hoods that had the correct thread size and didnt consider the technical and operational aspects. I feel rather stupid now - but at least my post has garnered a decent outcome.

Thanks Normadel
That's a very useful tip. I'll give the filter a trial particularly as I will soon be in the market for a slightly bigger wide angle lens.
Thanks

Be sure to get thin ring filters if you are going to use them on wide angle lenses.

EF 85mm f/1.8 USM uses the ET-65 III lens hood. I used to own the lens and that was the lens hood. It’s not petal shaped

Good morning
Arrived back from our Scottish Highland trip last night and eagerly fitted my EW-73C. Brilliant! No 'encroachment'
Thanks Brian et al.
More new lens hoods arriving today.
So glad I asked the question.

Hi Zakslm
I thought you might like this short story. While on one of the ferry journeys last week in the Highlands a couple sat near us and the guy had a canon around his kneck and they took singular photos of each other. So I offered to take a photo of them together - which he accepted - after seeing I also had a canon!
His camera was an entry level Mirrorless and I noticed the lens hood was a strange shape. The couple were German with good English - so I told him about this post discussion and asking him about his hood. So very quickly he told me he'd chopped it down with a hacksaw for the similar encroachment issues!
So I'm not alone.
Cheers

Ramsden,
That is funny!
I don't know if I'd take a hacksaw to a lens hood, but that gentleman and I are kindered spirits!
I have read that in a pinch, people fit the the sleeves from a Starbucks or similar disposable paper coffee cups on the front of their lens to block glare from the sun, etc. There are many DIY solutions around - both good and not so good that lots of photographers use and for some of us, that increases the enjoyment of our hobby/obsession!
Regards,
LZ
