Hello slushsucks,

Thanks for letting us know what Canon product you've got. The ZR850 is an older model which we have retired. While that means that Canon USA no longer offers direct support for it, your friends here in the Canon Community are welcome to offer suggestions!

You can also speak with a Canon Upgrade Program specialist to help you find a modern replacement that would meet your current needs at a discount. You can reach them Monday through Friday at 1-866-443-8002.

Hope this helps!

I did post on the community site to get information because I know it is retired.  I do not want an upgrade as that will go out of "style" too...this is an amazing camera and it is just sad that there is not way to use it anymore.

It's not necessarily about it going out of style. Technology has just moved on.

I had one of these cameras (I think it was even the ZR850). I loved it, too. The quality was really decent, but when I upgraded my laptop, I lost my Firewire port. This was way back when Vista came out. I started scrounging for external Firewire adapters, and they just didn't exist.

It sounds like a total cop-out, but the truth is that as Mini-DV's popularity started to wane, Microsoft and Apple decided not to support it in their updates. Eventually, iMovie stopped supporting it, and so did Windows Movie Maker.

When I was on the phones in support, some of my least favorite calls were when people found their old DV camera and realized the tape had basically fused to the video head in their camera. They lost their footage and camera all at the same time.

iMovie still supports DV input via firewire. But I don't know how long it will stay.

*Adobe* has dropped support.

Shut up! I was told iMovie dropped support for Firewire a LONG time ago! How do you connect the Firewire?

It is all in my user tip I posted to the Mac board.

Basically a Firewire->TB2 adapter (rare) and a TB2->TB3 adapter.

The lengths we will go to keep our gadgets alive 😂

It is not the *gadget* I am trying to keep alive, but the *memories*!

Is this via firewire?
